As one of the largest animation studios in Taiwan, MoonShine has the largest self-owned domestic render farm equipped with in-house-developed real-time image search system, which not only satisfies customers' diverse motion art design requirements, but also makes it possible to serve more industries.
In addition to the main animation business, MoonShine is now also involved in VFX post-production, commercial digital advertising, music video virtual reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and e-sports games. Its published and well-known works include "Own the Day" MV of the well-known singer JJ Lin, the visual effects of the popular mobile game "Taichi Panda", the animation trailer of domestic film "The Killer Who Never Kills", and the advertisement of video game "Gone with the World" featuring the baseball player Dai-Kang Yang. MoonShine hopes to introduce more innovative ideas and technologies for Taiwan's animation industry through constant communication with animation industry overseas.
Currently, only a handful of companies in the Taiwanese animation industry employ over 100 employees, and MoonShine is one of them. In the past, due to network environment and device limitations, when multiple clients were accessing files on the server, the data read and write speed is not only slow, but also negatively impacting the overall workflow. Moreover, as file access permissions of various departments cannot be segmented systematically, it easily caused difficulties in back end management. So one of the main requirements of MoonShine is to find a storage solution with SSD caching and easy management.
MoonShine has its own image database (VITAG) and render farm; it takes a huge deal of capacity to store each work's original files. When a team needed to upload its works to the internal storage space or to provide the company's FTP server for a customer to upload files, it took a lot of time because of network bandwidth limitations. It was even more time-consuming if the customer needed to modify and update frequently, so MoonShine urgently needs to find a fast and reliable data transmission solution.
Considering the current working environment and future expansion possibilities, MoonShine has chosen TVS-682, QNAP's mid-range model. TVS-682 employs the Intel® 7th generation 14nm nanotechnology dual-core processor to greatly enhance computing and data processing capabilities. Coupled with concepts of “storage tiering”, “application partitioning” and “network offloading”, it not only optimizes storage efficiency, but also enhances overall operational performance. After using the Toshiba N300's NAS hard drive, MoonShine is quite satisfied with its performance. In addition to supporting 24/7 frequent data access, it also has built-in multiple impact sensing technology to detect and mitigate downtime caused by impact and running vibration to effectively improve stability. In addition, N300 has error repair and control function, which greatly reduces data error recovery time and ensures user data integrity. Coupled with its anti-collision and shock-resistant features, it provides the most solid data protection for MoonShine.
When dealing with massive animation materials, the SSD cache technology provided by TVS-682 can effectively improve the IOPS performance of hard disk access and reduce access delay to support various project file reading requirements at any time. This not only shortens post-production time, but also allows SSD configuration to achieve optimal allocation, effectively overcome the performance delay lag caused by equipment limitations in the past.
In the past, in the process of file transfer and online editing, file transmission is often time-consuming due to bandwidth limitation. For the MoonShine production team, project members often need to modify files in different operating systems. In the past, they have encountered data corruption and format inconsistencies caused by file transfer. TVS-682 supports communication protocols such as SMB and AFP and allows users to directly edit NAS files online, and its built-in powerful file transfer and sharing functions also makes the old, complicated process of downloading, modifying and uploading much easier. MoonShine can now adjust in real time according to customer needs to improve project quality.
As the largest animation render farm in Taiwan, in addition to massive storage space, MoonShine places even more emphasis on protection of important data. TVS-682 supports a variety of RAID configurations, and can flexibly arrange RAID configurations according to data importance. If RAID storage space is insufficient in the future, it can also expand storage capacity without downtime, or change the original RAID configuration to ensure data security.
